University of Cincinnati and University of International Business and Economics Attain Prestigious Global Centers of Insurance Excellence Designation for 2023

New York, New York – Dec. 4, 2023: The International Insurance Society (IIS) has named the University of Cincinnati Carl H. Lindner III Center for Insurance & Risk Management and the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) as 2023 inductees for the Global Centers of Insurance Excellence (GCIE). The IIS recognized the institutions at an awards ceremony held during the Global Insurance Forum on Nov. 6 at the Hilton Singapore Orchard.

GCIE Focus: Drake University, College of Business and Public Administration, Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) Program

Drake’s minor in risk management and insurance (RMI), offered through the College of Business and Public Administration, distinguishes itself by attracting students from throughout the University regardless of their major. A student can earn the minor by completing seven RMI courses that cover key components of risk management and insurance.

GCIE Focus: Temple University, Fox School of Business Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management

The Risk Management and Insurance Program and the Actuarial Science Program at the Fox School of Business, Temple University prepares students to navigate shifting responsibilities and evolving complexities of managing risk in a multinational context. The Department of Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management (RIHM) offers BBA, Master of Science, and doctoral degrees that train students for workplace excellence and careers in academia.

GCIE Focus: St. John's University, Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science (GSRM)

The Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science (GSRM) was founded in 1901 as the Insurance Society of New York and over the years evolved into The College of Insurance (TCI). In June of 2001, TCI merged with St. John’s University, becoming the School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science (SRM), part of The Peter J. GCIE Focus: Lingnan University, Risk and Insurance Management (RIM) Programme

The Risk and Insurance Management (RIM) programme launched the second term of the 1999-2000 school year and is recognized by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF). Since 2016, the professional training of the curriculum has been further strengthened. The CII currently grants our programme an exemption of 130 credits towards its insurance qualifications.

GCIE Focus: University of Iowa, The Emmett J. Vaughan Institute of Risk Management and Insurance

The Emmett J. Vaughan Institute of Risk Management and Insurance administers the RMI Program which is housed in the Department of Finance in the Tippie College of Business. The University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business is AACSB accredited. The Tippie College Undergraduate program is ranked 19th among public institutions in the US by US News & World Report.

GCIE Focus: Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) Graduate School of Global Insurance and Pension

Sungkyunkwan University is a top tier university in Korea with global ranking 100, and the Graduate School of Global Insurance and Pension is the first graduate school providing specialist programs, perceived also as one of the best quality graduate schools in SKKU.

GCIE Focus: University of Alabama - Culverhouse College of Business

The University of Alabama has a proud heritage of teaching Risk Management, Insurance & Financial Services (RMI) and Actuarial Science (AS).  The first insurance course was taught here in 1921, only five years after Dr. Solomon S. Huebner taught the first university course in the subject.  Students have been qualifying for actuarial designations for decades and in 2007 a formal actuarial science program was established. Beginning in fall 2019 students may elect to take a newly established minor in RMI or in AS.  

GCIE Focus: Universität Hamburg

The Universität Hamburg has a longstanding history of nationally and internationally renowned scholarship in risk and insurance research and education with a tradition reaching back until for more than hundred years. Insurance related research and teaching is bundled in the Hamburg Center for Insurance Research (HZV – Hamburger Zentrum für Versicherungswissenschaft) which is an interdisciplinary center consisting of business, law and actuarial science faculty.

Global Centers of Insurance Excellence (GCIE) Designees Announced


Nine universities will be designated by the International Insurance Society as Global Centers of Insurance Excellence (GCIE) in 2018.  In total, the program has recognized 29 programs from 10 countries.
