Joan T. Schmit, Ph.D., CPCU, ARM

Joan T. Schmit holds the American Family Insurance Distinguished Chair in Risk Management and Insurance at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she has been on the faculty since 1988. She also serves as an affiliate faculty member in the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, the Peking University China Center for Insurance and Social Security Research, and in the risk management and insurance institute at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Prior to joining the faculty at UW, Professor Schmit spent four years on the faculty at the University of South Carolina. She also has been a visiting scholar at the University of Virginia, George Washington University, University of Bath, Peking University, and University of Cologne.

From 2008 to 2012, she served in the dean’s office, as Senior Associate Dean, Vice Dean, and Interim Dean. She currently serves as the Risk and Insurance Department Chair

Dr. Schmit has published extensively in insurance and legal journals. Among her areas of expertise include insurance regulation, microinsurance, reputation risk, enterprise risk management, and the interaction of law and economics in an insurance and risk management context.
