The Dr. William T. Hold / The National Alliance Program in Risk Management and Insurance is housed within the Department of Risk Management/Insurance, Real Estate and Legal Studies. The program is one of the oldest and largest in the nation. Close interaction among students, faculty members, alumni and the business community are hallmarks of the program. The program maintains two centers and offers degrees at the undergraduate, master’s, and PhD level. All degrees provide students with a well-rounded curriculum and a variety of job placement services.

The undergraduate program offers students the ability to earn academic credit for approved internships, allows student to learn more about careers through a mentor program, provides leadership and growth opportunities through participation in the Gamma Iota Insurance International Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science Collegiate Fraternity. Students can engage in professional development through attendance at industry conferences, participation in case competitions/challenges, and activities and seminars supported by the industry.

The master’s program is designed for the working professional. It is fully online and can be completed in just under two years. The courses, taught by knowledgeable faculty, focus on the critical thinking through analysis and application of concepts to real-world situations. Alumni of the program are leaders in the risk management and insurance field.

Florida State University is one of the few universities in the United States that offer a PhD program with a concentration in risk management and insurance. This program primarily prepares students for careers in academia by providing both education and training in research and teaching. Students have obtained positions at universities across the country.

The RMI Program maintains two centers. The Florida Catastrophic Storm Risk Management Center (Storm Center) was created by the Florida Legislature in 2007. The primary responsibilities of the Storm Center include publishing and collecting information related to catastrophe storm risk management and ensure this information is available to a variety of stakeholders including businesses, individuals, and policymakers. In addition, the Storm Center also organizes conferences and other events to educate consumers and policymakers on issues related to catastrophe storm risk management. The Center for Risk Management Education and Research provides educational and professional development opportunities for students and works to foster continuous interaction between the Dr. William T. Hold / The National Alliance Program in Risk Management and the industry. It also organizes events for stakeholders on current issues related to risk management and insurance and provides support to faculty with the goal of producing high-quality research.

Undergraduate and master’s students are able to receive credit towards multiple designations and are eligible to receive five Florida licenses upon successful completion of the program. Both programs are also ranked among the top 10 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.
